Earlier this week I posted about How to Make Oatmeal, and while both stovetop and microwave versions are easy, these Overnight Oats are by far the simplest way to make oatmeal. Overnight Oats are a healthy breakfast option that you can enjoy at home or on the go. All you need is 5 minutes to quickly mix all the ingredients together and store in a jar in the fridge overnight. The next morning you’ll have a pot of soft, creamy oats that required no cooking at all - great for summer! You can enjoy overnight oats cold, at room temperature or you can even warm them up in the microwave. You can also easily customise these oats to whatever flavour you like through add-in’s or toppings. The options are endless once you learn this basic overnight oats recipe.
What are overnight oats?
Overnight oats are essentially are no-cook way of preparing oats. You simply soak old fashioned / rolled oats in a milk and yoghurt mixture in the fridge overnight, and in the morning they are smooth, creamy and ready to eat as is. Magic!
Do you eat overnight oats hot or cold?
You can eat overnight oats at whatever temperature you prefer. They are perfect served cold immediately from the fridge, or you can allow them to sit out of the bench for 10 or so minutes to remove the chill. You can also zap them in the microwave in 15 second increments (you should only need one or two) to make them warmer.
OVERNIGHT OATS INGREDIENTS LIST
It might seem like there’s a few more ingredients required then traditional oatmeal, but the extras are all everyday ingredients and they really help give your overnight oats flavour. I happily eat these oats as is without any toppings - that’s how delicious they are! Here’s what you’ll need (full measurements in the recipe card below)…
Old Fashioned / Rolled Oats Milk Yoghurt Chia Seeds Honey Cinnamon Vanilla Extract
Add-Ins Overnight Oats are all about striking the right consistency. Once you have your basic overnight oats recipe mastered, you can easily add-in or customise the recipe to change the flavour. Try adding in the following to the overnight oats mixture before refrigerating overnight OR add as a topping when you are ready to serve:
Stewed Cinnamon Apples - my favourite! Cocoa powder (only mix in with all the ingredients while you are making your overnight oats. Don’t add as a topping) Nut butter Chopped Nuts Sliced fruit Grated carrot Chocolate Chips Shredded Coconut
